How it works

Manual lymphatic drainage consists of gliding and gentle-pressure movements, slow and continuous, applied in the direction of lymphatic flow. This movement stimulates the return of fluids to the circulation, reducing local swelling, decreasing inflammation and favoring tissue nutrition.

It is a manual technique, without needles or devices, recommended both for aesthetic care and for recovery after surgical procedures.

Protocol and results

It is recommended for most post-operative plastic surgeries — such as liposuction, abdominoplasty and breast surgery — as well as for edema, cellulite, scars and premenstrual tension.

Post-operatively, sessions usually begin between 48 and 72 hours after the surgical procedure, at a frequency of 2 to 3 times per week; the general protocol usually involves about 10 sessions, always adjusted according to the surgeon's guidance and individual needs.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about Lymphatic Drainage

When should I start drainage after surgery?
Generally between 48 and 72 hours after the procedure, always according to the guidance of the responsible surgeon.
How many sessions are needed?
The protocol usually involves about 10 sessions, adjusted according to individual needs and the type of procedure.
Does lymphatic drainage hurt?
No. The movements are gentle and slow — most patients describe the session as relaxing, even in a post-operative context.
Is drainage useful for cellulite outside the post-operative context?
Yes. It supports circulation and fluid retention, two factors that make up the cellulite picture, and it is common in combined protocols.
Can I combine drainage with other procedures?
Yes — it is common to pair it with other technologies at the Institute within a personalized protocol, defined during the assessment consultation.
Who cannot have lymphatic drainage?
People with acute infections, phlebitis, active cancer, heart failure, low blood pressure, untreated hyperthyroidism or fever.
